Inside a steel vault in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range are more than twenty art pieces resembling the unique style of Jackson Pollock. Their provenance, however, is shrouded in mystery, relying on intriguing clues worthy of a detective novel. J.T. Ravize and Linde Ravize, the present owners, propose an investigative documentary to pursue leads developed over two decades and millions of dollars spent. To determine their authenticity, chemical and DNA testing, along with advanced technology, will be employed.
The documentary delves into the origins of the paintings, which point to a "mysterious girlfriend" named Helen Rodfield, a Manhattan art dealer named Armin Herskovitz, and a New Jersey art consultant named Gabor Nemeth. Nemeth was the original owner of the paintings, and before his death, a video interview provided additional clues worth exploring. The possible roles of Rodfield and Herskovitz in the acquisition of the artworks remain intriguing avenues to be investigated.
Viewers will be introduced to Jackson Pollock, a renowned artist infamous for his alcoholism, womanizing, and reclusive nature. Pollock's reputation for keeping poor records of his works is contrasted with his wife, Lee Krasner, who was equally lacking in record-keeping skills. Upon Pollock's death in 1956, Krasner expedited the process of having artist friends sign a group of his paintings, many of which he had not bothered to sign himself. Despite his rarity in signing his paintings, one of Ravize's collection does bear the signature "Jackson Pollock."
The documentary also explores the complex and sometimes dubious world of art authentication. The art world is depicted as notoriously corrupt, protective of its expertise, and reluctant to authenticate any painting without a strong provenance. As expected, skeptics from the art world cast doubts on J.T. Ravize's research and the authenticity of the collection, making it challenging, by their standards, to prove the paintings as Pollock's.
Produced by award-winning filmmaker and investigative journalist Harry Moses, "Pursuing Jackson Pollock" presents a captivating journey to uncover the truth behind these mysterious paintings. The goal is not merely to convince, but to follow every trail and see where the journey leads. The documentary has the potential to run as a stand-alone piece or a limited series, offering audiences a riveting and thought-provoking exploration of the world of art, authenticity, and the enduring legacy of Jackson Pollock.
